It occurs when the plantar fascia, the tissue connecting your heel to the front of your foot, becomes inflamed. The most common symptom is pain under the heel, although patients may also feel pain underneath the middle of the foot.

The plantar fascia plays an important role in foot health. It absorbs shock and supports the arch. When it is subjected to too much stress, it loses elasticity and causes uncomfortable pain. The pain generally begins with your first steps in the morning and gradually increases after prolonged walking or standing. Although the exact cause of plantar fasciitis remains unknown, certain factors can increase your risk of developing it. These include:

Overuse: Spending long hours on your feet places additional stress on the plantar fascia.

Unsuitable footwear: Shoes with poor arch support can lead to foot pain.

Excessive weight-bearing exercise: Activities that repeatedly load the foot, such as prolonged walking and running, can worsen pain.

Other factors: Obesity, tight muscles, back pain and other foot problems, such as flat feet or high arches, can also contribute to plantar fasciitis.

How Can You Protect the Plantar Fascia and Reduce Pain?

Choose suitable exercises: If you have had plantar fasciitis, choose low-load or non-weight-bearing activities, such as swimming and cycling, that place less pressure on the fascia.

Wear supportive shoes: Comfortable shoes with good arch support help protect the plantar fascia.

Use foot orthotics: Depending on where you feel pain, the right orthotic can reduce discomfort and support your arch. Call us to book an appointment for your orthotics!

Use a frozen water bottle: Gently rolling a frozen water bottle under your foot can reduce inflammation.

Stretch your calf muscles: The plantar fascia is connected to the calf muscles through the Achilles tendon. Stretching these muscles therefore reduces pressure on the plantar fascia.

Ignoring plantar fasciitis can lead to chronic heel pain that interferes with daily activities.
