How Physiotherapy Can Help with Your Pain

Are you dealing with lower back pain, a sports injury, tendinitis or another musculoskeletal problem? Are these issues beginning to keep you from doing what you enjoy, or simply from enjoying life? Are you looking for help but unsure which type of professional you need? In this article, I explain why physiotherapists are considered the mechanics of the human body and what you can expect when you see one. I also explain how physiotherapy can help you.

What Is Physiotherapy, and How Can It Help You?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that uses the latest natural, evidence-based physical approaches to help people reduce pain, maintain and maximize their function, and improve overall well-being.

Why Is Physiotherapy One of the Best Alternative Treatment Options?

– Physiotherapists are well trained to identify and classify your problem. During a detailed assessment, if your physiotherapist identifies a potentially life-threatening or very serious condition requiring medical or other professional attention, you will be told exactly what to do next.

– Your physiotherapist does more than reduce your symptoms. They also identify the root of the problem and the possible reasons behind those symptoms. Through a detailed explanation, you will learn how to help prevent pain from returning and how to manage your symptoms yourself if it does.

– Using a variety of treatment methods, physiotherapy supports a timely, optimal recovery so you can enjoy life the way you want to.

Conditions Treated with Physiotherapy:

  • Lower back pain and neck pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Tendinitis
  • Postoperative rehabilitation
  • Work-related injuries
  • Joint sprains and muscle strains
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Jaw pain (TMJ)
  • Recovery following a motor vehicle accident (MVA)

Different Treatment Techniques:

Physiotherapists can use a variety of techniques when treating patients. Depending on your condition, your treatment may include any of the following:

  • Functional training
  • Stretching and prescribed exercise
  • Self-management strategies and lifestyle advice
  • Joint mobilization and manipulation
  • Massage
  • Dry needling
  • Taping
  • Electrotherapy
  • Ultrasound

What Should I Expect at My First Physiotherapy Appointment?

People are often pleasantly surprised after their first physiotherapy visit. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for your first appointment:

The initial assessment usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. Its main purpose is to establish a physiotherapy diagnosis, classify your problem and determine whether the physiotherapist can help you. You will be asked questions about your condition. The physiotherapist will then use specific tests to assess your posture, function, range of motion, strength and other factors related to your problem.

You will then receive an explanation of your condition and a detailed action plan, including recommendations, an estimated treatment timeline and the steps you should begin taking to address the problem. By the end of the session, you will have been given recommended exercises and received some treatment.
