How Can Osteopathy Help with Digestive Problems Such as Acid Reflux, Heartburn, Indigestion or Constipation?
If you experience any of these problems, have seen your doctor several times and have completed all the prescribed medical tests with negative results, here is how osteopathy may help:
Let us begin with a little anatomy. Nerve branches emerge at each level of the spinal cord through openings called foramina between two vertebrae. At certain levels, mainly in the thoracic region, these nerves supply specific organs and help control and regulate the digestive system. See the image below. An osteopath’s first step is to clear the pathway of a compressed or irritated nerve affected by a vertebral subluxation or muscle tension.
Once these electrical wires, the nerves, are released, the osteopath can work specifically on the organ by stretching its fascia, a web-like tissue surrounding all the body’s organs and muscles, and its smooth muscles. This provides feedback and stimulates proper nerve function, helping regulate the digestive system.
Another approach to digestive problems is craniosacral therapy. Returning to anatomy, we all have a nerve called the vagus nerve, a systemic control centre that regulates the heart, lungs and digestive tract. See the image below. For example, when we are stressed, our heart beats faster, blood pressure rises and we may experience stomach pain or constipation. Stimulating the vagus nerve can relieve these symptoms. The techniques an osteopath uses for this purpose are known as craniosacral therapy.

Now that you understand how an osteopath may help with acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion or constipation, are you more open to trying it? Do not keep waiting and living with discomfort. Call to book an appointment!
